Woman Warns Homeowners Against Rubber Band Break-Ins

You would think breaking into homes would be difficult nowadays with all the home security system technology out there. Yet this only makes criminals figure out more clever ways to commit home invasion.

A Texas mom named Kim Fleming Cernigllaro had an encounter with a situation that proved very scary, especially learning how this burglar got into her home.

One day she heard a loud banging on the front door. Kim was home alone. The banging made it appear as the person was in trouble. Kim has a rule of not opening the door no matter what, especially to strangers.

Eventually the person tired of the knocking and walked away. Thirty minutes later, Kim went outside to see if the person did any damage or left anything. There she found a rubber band wrapped around the door handle. It was oddly pressed down on the latch, and she knew she was going to have to call her husband immediately. The husband told her to grab the gun, and call the police right away.

Heres what she said on social media:

The Sheriff came by yesterday and said this is happening all of a sudden, as soon as you unlatch the door, they do not wait for you to turn the knob, they can bust in on you.

Turns out the rubber band actually serves as a wedge which will help open the door for the home invader. No need to open the door, if you just unlatch it the intruder can get in and invade your home, likely causing harm to you and whoever else is inside.

Here are 5 tips to stay safe:

Dont leave old mail and newspapers outside your house.
Dont make your bed every morning.
Fake home security if you cant actually get it installed.
Light up your house.
Keep them guessing as to where your valuables are.
